Most energy auditors know that a thermal imaging camera is a great tool for rapid inspection of building heat loss. But less well known is that a $50 infrared laser thermometer makes a great, cost-effective alternative.

Admittedly it's not quite as good as a thermal imaging camera - you can't visualize the heat escaping from the building in a single glance... But an infrared thermometer with laser targeting is a powerful tool for finding thermal leaks.

A 2002 study from Cornell University estimated that "vampire appliances" were costing American consumers 3 billion dollars a year in wasted energy. And today's electricity prices would probably make that cost estimate seem quite conservative.

But it's only when you obtain and use a kilowatt meter that you become painfully aware of the amount of electricity that many appliances use when they are switched off.
