Most energy auditors know that a thermal imaging camera is a great tool for rapid inspection of building heat loss. But less well known is that a $50 infrared laser thermometer makes a great, cost-effective alternative.

Admittedly it's not quite as good as a thermal imaging camera - you can't visualize the heat escaping from the building in a single glance... But an infrared thermometer with laser targeting is a powerful tool for finding thermal leaks.

Most non-residential buildings are unoccupied at Christmas as the regular occupants are at home for the holiday season. But, for many buildings, the Christmas period is a disaster as far as energy management is concerned, as lots of equipment is left switched on unnecessarily.

Computers, printers, lights, photocopiers, industrial equipment - the list goes on, but the energy theme is simple: if you don't switch it off before you go home for the holidays, it'll probably still be on when you get back...

The Dell-Winston School Solar Car Challenge was established ten years ago to help motivate students in science and engineering. The Challenge, a part of The Winston School in Dallas, teaches high school students around the world how to build roadworthy solar cars. We then provide a safe environment for them to display their solar cars. On even-numbered years, we share the fun of the world-famous Texas Motor Speedway; on odd-numbered years, the teams drive cross-country to share their projects with millions of people.

All we do to turn the leaf into a plate, bowl or platter is wash it in locally sourced spring water and heat press it into shape.
